In 2006 at the height of the outsourcing (and offshoring) trend, Thomas Koulopoulos wrote Smartsourcing. The book outlines the value of outsourcing and how companies could effectively balance risk and opportunity by focusing on core competencies. As opposed to “outsourcing”, defined as reducing cost and transferring risk of non-core processes to a 3rd party, “Smartsourcing” calls for an emphasis on innovation and growth through partners “who can innovate on the non-core processes.”
