ExactGREEN hosts First Annual Recycle Day!

You may have read my blog post last month about the launch of ExactGREEN, ExactTarget's newest employee committee with the mission of helping ExactTarget become an even more sustainable company. I'm proud to annouce that our first major event took place on June 15th - a Recycle Day!

We partnered with with Disposal Alternatives Organization (DAO) to organize a free drop-off recycling site in the parking lot of our Gibson Building in downtown Indianapolis. In drive-through fashion, over 40 ExactTarget employees brought in a wide range of recycleable items - from electronics to leftover paints - even an old washing machine! DAO collected the items for safe, efficient, and local recycling. By the end of the day, we had gathered two truckloads worth of recyclables!

Founded in 2008, DAO's mission is two-fold: to provide ethical appliance recycling options to Indy area residents while creating well-paying, green jobs to people who need an opportunity or a second chance. The company has created more than 125 jobs in the past 27 months of operation and provides free recycling services to city and county governments, neighborhood associations, civic groups, and citizens. DAO diverts 600 to 800 tons a week of recyclable materials from Indiana landfills and has reduced leaching and streams of toxic chemicals from water treatment processes.

We're excited to partner with DAO to help ExactTarget become even greener! Our first Recycle Day was such a success that ExactGREEN plans to make it an annual or biannual event! We're also upgrading our current recycle bins to special DAO recycle bins in our three Indianapolis offices, so employees can recycle items beyond just aluminum and plastic at all times. Now that's green and smart!
