Launch Day, NASA Tweetup, History

Posted by: Erik Sowa
Friday, July 8, 2011

We left Orlando at 2 a.m. this morning to beat the traffic, heading to Kennedy Space Center. Many of the 150 #NASATweetup participants were there with us, and we had an informal, early morning tailgate party complete with laptops showing video of the shuttle on the pad, tunes cranking into the night, and even glowsticks. At 5a.m. we made our way to the tweetup tent. The launch pad was visible in the distance, all lit up in the early morning darkness.

The press area by the countdown clock was already crazy busy when we arrived. I suppose it takes “the end of an era” to draw this size of media...

Preparing for Liftoff

Posted by: Erik Sowa
Friday, July 8, 2011
Thursday was the first official day of the #STS135 #NASAtweetup. Using the power of social media, I made a good friend in Pat Bell, an aerospace engineer based in Cincinnati. We arrived at Kennedy Space Center and soon found ourselves near the 525-foot tall, 34-story Vehicle Assembly Building. Built for the purpose of assembling the Saturn V rockets that took our Apollo astronauts to the moon, it has served the Shuttle program well.

The center of Tweetup activities is a tent on the hill above the countdown clock. It looks across a lagoon towards the launch pad. We started the day by making...Read More »

CoTweet Powering NASA's Social Media For Final Shuttle Launch

Posted by: Erik Sowa
Thursday, July 7, 2011
Nasa TweetupWhen Jesse Engle asked me if I would be interested in attending the final shuttle launch and the #NASATweetup on behalf of the ExactTarget Social Media Lab team, I jumped at the chance.

NASA programs have always been a personal and professional inspiration for me, as my early interest in science and engineering was stimulated and reinforced by the Apollo program. In my youth, I followed the space program with intense interest. I can remember obtaining permission to stay up late and watch the Apollo 11 astronauts walk on the moon for the first time, and being utterly disappointed in my own...Read More »

Insights From The Road

Friday, April 1, 2011

Joel Book and I had an opportunity to present at Social Media Super Panel today in conjunction with the Canadian Marketing Association of Calgary.

The event was wildly successful - we had a diverse group of attendees representing agencies, b2c, b2b, and non-profit organizations. No doubt the interest in social media is sky-high. The room was packed and the crowd - about 170 marketers – was highly engaged and interested in learning as much as possible about the best practices in social media.

Briefly, I wanted to highlight the big themes/trends bubbling up out of our presentation, interaction...

How @Toyota Turned #toyotafail Into a Social Media PR Win

Posted by: Katie Van Domelen
Saturday, February 19, 2011

By now the stack of case studies showing how social media can cause huge disruptions for companies is fairly large. Yesterday it seemed like yet another example would be added to the list.

At 11:30am a well established 'mommy blogger,' @crissy, tweeted a post from her blog, Dear Crissy, calling out Toyota for a shady email pitch she received.

ToyotaFail Tweet from Crissy

The email came from MommyNetworks.org and it offered bloggers a chance to "score" a $10.00 Amazon gift card for helping to spread positive news about Toyota. The email provided links to positive content about Toyota and asked the bloggers to rate, share or...
