With over 50 breakout
sessions during Connections 2011, interactive marketers had access to
hundreds of actionable ideas, proven strategies and success stories
in every room. One of the highlights for me was a session that
examined international email marketing campaigns.
Here are five of the great ideas fellow marketers shared with their
peers.
1. Make training easy. Sean Mattson of
Hitachi Data Systems stressed that robust
training is a key. When rolling out a global email marketing
initiative, Mattson found the best training tool was to create
short video clips to build a robust library...

Consumers are interacting with
brands in real time across email, mobile, social media and the Web
– often from the phone they carry in their purse or pocket.
It’s a new real-time reality that creates tremendous opportunity
for brands to engage, yet many still fall short – siloing
interactions to online and offline teams and delivering brand
experiences that are far from ideal.
The best minds in marketing have
joined us at Connections 2011 to empower
marketers with new ideas, innovations and products to meet the
needs of today’s hyperconnected consumer. From eMarketer’s
Geoff Ramsey to...

In the spring of 2001 at the most boring industry conference I had
ever attended in my life, I met 3 guys that remained excited even
though they were sharing my boredom at the "Clean Show," an
industry event for dry cleaners, washing machine makers and hotel
laundry buyers. Scott Dorsey, Chris Baggott and Peter McCormick
were manning a booth with a crude screen shot of a new software
they were calling ExactTarget. The tradeshow booth was pretty
terrible, but I was so bored anything with a bit of technology was
more interesting than watching the giant linen folding machine
again.

All
three of...

I don’t know about you, but at ExactTarget we are all in extreme
preparation mode for next week’s Connections! No –
just us? Well, as you begin to prepare for Connections, there’s one
important aspect you should keep in mind – Nexusing!
What’s Nexusing? It’s a concept brainstormed, drawn out, and
launched by the ExactTarget partner team to describe what happens
when networking and technology come together to produce something
so great that the sum is better than its parts! We do this all the
time at ExactTarget. We meet other great marketing technology
companies with products that when...

I had the opportunity last week to sit down with Matt Hunckler,
the Director of Marketing at Slingshot SEO, and talk with him
about Search Engine Optimization and how organizations are
incorporating it into their marketing mix. Here’s a bit of our
conversation:

Matt Hunckler
Director of Marketing
Slingshot SEO
@hunckler
Colby: What is
SEO? It seems a little abstract – like alchemy – can you get
us up to speed on this topic?
Matt: No
problem. It's a fairly complex practice, but I'll see if I can
break it down a bit.
From the perspective of the search
engines, search is about providing the best...

As marketers, it's difficult to push engaging, relevant, timely
content in every single email you send. When you start to see those
open and click rates dip, it may be time to wake them up with a
re-engagement campaign.
After pouring through various marketing email examples, we've
compiled a few of the reoccurring tactics marketers use to get a
subscriber's attention.
Education:The main message of this tactic is to encourage subscribers to make
the most of their subscription. Give instructions on how
subscribers can get the most value from your emails. Unengagement
may mean they have a lack of...

Websites
have evolved so much since the inception of the World Wide Web. I
recall first receiving a book on HTML for my 13th birthday and
being incredibly excited to begin making my first Web pages. (Note:
for those asking why I was coding HTML at age 13, I often ask
myself the same question.) Back then, you had your website
published on something like Geocities, Angelfire, or some other
free provider who was willing to take on the expense of hosting
while displaying horrific ads to monetise their business model.
Only if you were serious did you have a domain!
Fast forward to now, where RSS is...

In the world of social media,
oftentimes the best strategy is to let your customers
promote the product for you. However, it can be
difficult to zero in on exactly how to create a strategy that both
improves SEO and creates viral media content on social media
outlets. With a snazzy design and some well timed emails,
Western
River Expeditions, an adventure tour company, has accomplished
this feat through the combined use of
Compendium and ExactTarget.
In short, Western River sends its clients a triggered email through
Resmark Systems,
tour operator software powered
by ExactTarget, inviting...

I'm excited that today my team, Documentation, is beginning our
concerted blogging effort. It's not that we like to talk about the
stuff we're working on (well, it's not
just that). We're
excited to have another avenue to hook our users up with resources
to make the best use of our email software, text messaging tools,
Twitter marketing, and all the other online and social marketing
tools that ExactTarget has to offer.
If it also helps prospective users in their product research, all
the better, which gets to an important aspect of our documentation
-- its open availability -- but I'll come...

Since my daughter was born over a year ago, I’ve wanted to create a
digital photo book to recap some of her special moments. I’ve
always enjoyed the concept of scrapbooking, but I’ve never been
good at completing one. It’s just too time consuming to have to do
everything manually. That’s why a digital photo book is so
appealing. You can easily select your layouts, drag-and-drop
photos, and wa-la – you’re done!

I’ve been researching lots of different
sites to try to find the best deal on a photo book. But nothing
could compare to the deal I found a few weeks ago on Groupon:
$10 for a 20-Page...
