The Michael Jackson Brand

Friday, June 26, 2009 by Amanda Cross
I was very sad to learn that Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, died yesterday, and it's no surprise that media everywhere is talking about the passing of this icon who changed the face of music and left an indelible mark on not only our popular music but our popular culture as well.

At HarvardBusiness.org, John Quelch talks about 10 factors that made Michael Jackson such an effective brand in his time. He talks about starting early, knowing when to go solo, and getting help and support from those who went before you.

One I think is missing is "Be cutting edge." You know the morphing effect that we take for granted in movies and commercials, can even do at home on our laptops? What was the first time you ever saw that? If you're like me, it was in the Black or White music video. It was so cool, so cutting edge that I remember sitting in my living room watching it, right after an episode of The Simpsons, even now.

Of course, the end of that same video held another lesson: be controversial. But that's a topic for a different post.

For now, rest in peace, MJ. I'll miss your brand!
